Co-op Multiplayer
1-3 Players (Solo or Co-op)
Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 is designed as a co-op third-person shooter for up to 3 players. Solo players can use AI teammates.
Squad Size & Player Count
Like the first game, Fireteam Elite 2 features 3-player squads:
- 3 Human Players: Invite friends or matchmake with strangers
- 2 Players + 1 AI: Duo with a friend, AI fills the third slot
- Solo + 2 AI: Play alone with two AI-controlled squadmates
Matchmaking
Expected matchmaking features based on the original and modern co-op standards:
- Quick Play: Automatically join a random mission with other players
- Mission Select: Host a specific mission and wait for others to join
- Private Lobbies: Friends-only sessions with invite codes
- Drop-In/Drop-Out: Players can join mid-mission (if supported)
AI Teammates
When playing solo or with fewer than 3 players, AI squadmates fill empty slots:
- AI companions automatically follow and fight alongside you
- They revive downed players and provide covering fire
- AI behavior may be less tactical than human players, especially on higher difficulties
- You cannot directly control AI loadouts or actions (based on FTE1)
Difficulty Scaling
Co-op games often scale difficulty based on player count. Expected:
- Standard Scaling: More players = more enemies or tougher spawns
- Solo-Friendly: Missions should be completable solo with AI on lower difficulties
- Challenge Modes: Extreme difficulties designed for coordinated 3-player teams
Communication
Effective co-op relies on communication:
- Voice Chat: In-game voice chat expected (may vary by platform)
- Text Chat: PC likely supports text chat
- Ping System: Contextual pings to mark enemies, items, or locations
- Emotes/Gestures: Quick communication for those without mics
Friend Invites & Parties
To play with friends:
- Platform Friends: Invite Steam/PlayStation/Xbox friends directly
- Crossplay Parties: If crossplay is enabled, cross-platform invites may require linking accounts
- Lobby Codes: Share a code for friends to join (if supported)
Loot & Progression
In co-op sessions:
- Individual Loot: Each player gets their own rewards (no competition)
- XP & Unlocks: All players earn progression toward character levels, weapon unlocks, and cosmetics
- Host Migration: If the host leaves, the session may migrate to another player (if supported)
PvP (Player vs Player)
The first Fireteam Elite was PvE-only (cooperative against AI). There's no indication that Fireteam Elite 2 will include PvP modes like deathmatch or team battles. The focus remains on squad-based co-op against Xenomorph swarms.
Seasonal & Endgame Co-op
Post-launch, expect:
- Seasonal Events: Limited-time missions with exclusive rewards
- Horde/Survival Modes: Wave-based challenges for max-level players
- Leaderboards: Compete for fastest clear times or highest scores
Based on FTE1: Co-op details extrapolate from the first game's structure. Official announcements closer to launch will clarify any changes or new features. See Sources for references.
